Sesamoiditis

What is Sesamoiditis?

Sesamoiditis is an irritation of the sesamoid bones, the tiny bones within the tendons that run to your big toe. Your sesamoid bones are active very time you push off against your big toe, and can fracture if continually irritated.

Sesamoiditis presents as pain under the ball of your foot behind your big toe, and can range from a mild ache to an intense throbbing. Two of its major causes are increased activity and high-arched feet.

Seek treatment early

It is important to see your podiatrist as early as possible if you think you are suffering from Sesamoiditis. Your treatment will depend on the nature and severity of your condition, and may include:

  • rest from aggravating activities
  • ice to reduce inflammation
  • anti-inflammatory medication
  • footwear changes to absorb shock and help support your feet
  • prescription orthotics
  • avoid hard floor surfaces and use OOFOS recovery footwear for shock absorption

Prescription orthotics are one of the one of the most important means of treating sesamoiditis because they reduce pressure on your sesamoid bones, redistributing weight more evenly across your arch and other metatarsals.

If you suspect you have Sesamoiditis, or are experiencing any pain under the ball of your foot, contact us.
