Helps alleviate myofascial pain
Dry needling is a technique used by our Podiatrists to help alleviate myofascial pain caused by trigger points within muscles. Trigger points, or tight knots, within a muscle can occur due to injuries, overuse, fatigue, gait abnormalities or muscle imbalance. Trigger points within muscles can cause local or referred muscle pain and can be very tender to direct pressure. Trigger points can also be the cause of tight or inhibited muscles, reducing flexibility and strength.Â
Dry needling is a treatment technique that uses super-fine acupuncture needles to deactivate and relax irritable trigger points within muscles. As the acupuncture needle enters the myofascial trigger point in the muscle, it stimulates the release of natural chemicals in the body that reduce pain, relaxes the muscle belly and consequently improves muscle function and flexibility (or range of movement) in the feet and legs.
Dry needling can be used in the treatment of many musculoskeletal conditions
Dry needling is usually used in conjunction with other podiatry treatment methods including foot mobilisation treatment, stretching and strengthening exercises, laser therapy, strapping, footwear and orthotic therapy as required for each individual patient.Â
Dry needling can be used in the treatment of many musculoskeletal conditions of the lower limb that might normally be treated with deep tissue massage or remedial massage therapy. When used in conjunction with traditional podiatry treatment techniques, dry needling for myofascial pain or injuries is a safe and effective option, providing rapid pain relief, improved flexibility and muscle function, getting you back on your feet, faster.  Â
