Fractures
Fractures in the feet and ankles as a result of trauma are common, and can occur in the heel bone, ankle or ankle joint, midfoot, metatarsals or toes.
It is important to see your podiatrist if you suspect you have a fracture in your foot or ankle, because inadequate treatment can lead to chronic pain, loss of mobility and the later onset of arthritis. If not already diagnosed, your podiatrist may require x-rays and diagnostic bone scans in order to determine the exact nature of your injury. Your treatment will then depend on the nature and severity of your condition, and may include: icing to reduce swelling and inflammation; rest from aggravating activities; a cast or walking brace to immobilise your foot while the fracture heals; orthopaedic taping and padding to ease your return to normal activities; prescription orthotics to avoid future problems arising.
