Ankle Sprains

Ankle sprains are the most common injury in sports. They typically involve injury to the ligaments on the outside of the ankle, when the ankle is suddenly rolled outwards.
 
A high percentage of athletes suffering an ankle sprain will go on to suffer a recurrent sprain, with some developing chronic instability, or multiple recurring sprains. The most common cause of this recurrence is improper diagnosis and inadequate treatment.
 
It is important to see your podiatrist if you suspect you have or suspect you have an ankle sprain. Once your podiatrist has determined the exact nature of your injury, you treatment may include:
  • icing to reduce swelling and inflammation;
  • rest from aggravating activities;
  • bracing or immobilisation to assist your ankle to heal;
  • exercises to restore, strength, flexibility and balance;
  • orthopaedic taping and padding to ease your return to normal activities;
  • prescription orthotics to avoid future problems arising.
